The Time Has Come!I have made a decision. I will no longer debate the issue of homosexuality in the church with anyone.
I will no longer engage the biblical ignorance that emanates from so many right-wing Christians about how the Bible condemns homosexuality, as if that point of view still has any credibility.

I will no longer discuss with them or listen to them tell me how homosexuality is "an abomination to God," about how homosexuality is a "chosen lifestyle," or about how through prayer and "spiritual counseling" homosexual persons can be "cured." Those arguments are no longer worthy of my time or energy. I will no longer dignify by listening to the thoughts of those who advocate "reparative therapy," as if homosexual persons are somehow broken and need to be repaired.

I will no longer talk to those who believe that the unity of the church can or should be achieved by rejecting the presence of, or at least at the expense of, gay and lesbian people. I will no longer take the time to refute the unlearned and undocumentable claims of certain world religious leaders who call homosexuality "deviant."

I will no longer listen to that pious sentimentality that certain Christian leaders continue to employ, which suggests some version of that strange and overtly dishonest phrase that "we love the sinner but hate the sin." That statement is, I have concluded, nothing more than a self-serving lie designed to cover the fact that these people hate homosexual persons and fear homosexuality itself, but somehow know that hatred is incompatible with the Christ they claim to profess, so they adopt this face-saving and absolutely false statement.

I will no longer temper my understanding of truth in order to pretend that I have even a tiny smidgen of respect for the appalling negativity that continues to emanate from religious circles where the church has for centuries conveniently perfumed its ongoing prejudices against blacks, Jews, women and homosexual persons with what it assumes is "high-sounding, pious rhetoric." The day for that mentality has quite simply come to an end for me. I will personally neither tolerate it nor listen to it any longer. The world has moved on, leaving these elements of the Christian Church that cannot adjust to new knowledge or a new consciousness lost in a sea of their own irrelevance. They no longer talk to anyone but themselves.

I will no longer seek to slow down the witness to inclusiveness by pretending that there is some middle ground between prejudice and oppression. There isn't. Justice postponed is justice denied. That can be a resting place no longer for anyone. An old civil rights song proclaimed that the only choice awaiting those who cannot adjust to a new understanding was to "Roll on over or we'll roll on over you!" Time waits for no one.

I will particularly ignore those members of my own Episcopal Church who seek to break away from this body to form a "new church," claiming that this new and bigoted instrument alone now represents the Anglican Communion. Such a new ecclesiastical body is designed to allow these pathetic human beings, who are so deeply locked into a world that no longer exists, to form a community in which they can continue to hate gay people, distort gay people with their hopeless rhetoric and to be part of a religious fellowship in which they can continue to feel justified in their homophobic prejudices for the rest of their tortured lives. Church unity can never be a virtue that is preserved by allowing injustice, oppression and psychological tyranny to go unchallenged.

In my personal life, I will no longer listen to televised debates conducted by "fair-minded" channels that seek to give "both sides" of this issue "equal time." I am aware that these stations no longer give equal time to the advocates of treating women as if they are the property of men or to the advocates of reinstating either segregation or slavery, despite the fact that when these evil institutions were coming to an end the Bible was still being quoted frequently on each of these subjects. It is time for the media to announce that there are no longer two sides to the issue of full humanity for gay and lesbian people. There is no way that justice for homosexual people can be compromised any longer.

I will no longer act as if the Papal office is to be respected if the present occupant of that office is either not willing or not able to inform and educate himself on public issues on which he dares to speak with embarrassing ineptitude.

I will no longer be respectful of the leadership of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who seems to believe that rude behavior, intolerance and even killing prejudice is somehow acceptable, so long as it comes from third-world religious leaders, who more than anything else reveal in themselves the price that colonial oppression has required of the minds and hearts of so many of our world's population.

I see no way that ignorance and truth can be placed side by side, nor do I believe that evil is somehow less evil if the Bible is quoted to justify it. I will dismiss as unworthy of any more of my attention the wild, false and uninformed opinions of such would-be religious leaders as Pat Robertson, James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Jimmy Swaggart, Albert Mohler, and Robert Duncan. My country and my church have both already spent too much time, energy and money trying to accommodate these backward points of view when they are no longer even tolerable.

I make these statements because it is time to move on. The battle is over. The victory has been won.

There is no reasonable doubt as to what the final outcome of this struggle will be.
· Homosexual people will be accepted as equal, full human beings, who have a legitimate claim on every right that both church and society have to offer any of us.
· Homosexual marriages will become legal, recognized by the state and pronounced holy by the church.
· "Don't ask, don't tell" will be dismantled as the policy of our armed forces.

We will and we must learn that equality of citizenship is not something that should ever be submitted to a referendum. Equality under and before the law is a solemn promise conveyed to all our citizens in the Constitution itself. Can any of us imagine having a public referendum on whether slavery should continue, whether segregation should be dismantled, whether voting privileges should be offered to women?

The time has come for politicians to stop hiding behind unjust laws that they themselves helped to enact, and to abandon that convenient shield of demanding a vote on the rights of full citizenship because they do not understand the difference between a constitutional democracy, which this nation has, and a "mobocracy," which this nation rejected when it adopted its constitution. We do not put the civil rights of a minority to the vote of a plebiscite.

I will also no longer act as if I need a majority vote of some ecclesiastical body in order to bless, ordain, recognize and celebrate the lives and gifts of gay and lesbian people in the life of the church. No one should ever again be forced to submit the privilege of citizenship in this nation or membership in the Christian Church to the will of a majority vote.

The battle in both our culture and our church to rid our souls of this dying prejudice is finished. A new consciousness has arisen. A decision has quite clearly been made. Inequality for gay and lesbian people is no longer a debatable issue in either church or state. Therefore, I will from this moment on refuse to dignify the continued public expression of ignorant prejudice by engaging it. I do not tolerate racism or sexism any longer. From this moment on, I will no longer tolerate our culture's various forms of homophobia. I do not care who it is who articulates these attitudes or who tries to make them sound holy with religious jargon.

I have been part of this debate for years, but things do get settled and this issue is now settled for me. I do not debate any longer with members of the "Flat Earth Society" either. I do not debate with people who think we should treat epilepsy by casting demons out of the epileptic person; I do not waste time engaging those medical opinions that suggest that bleeding the patient might release the infection. I do not converse with people who think that Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans as punishment for the sin of being the birthplace of Ellen DeGeneres or that the terrorists hit the United Sates on 9/11 because we tolerated homosexual people, abortions, feminism or the American Civil Liberties Union.

I am tired of being embarrassed by so much of my church's participation in causes that are quite unworthy of the Christ I serve or the God whose mystery and wonder I appreciate more each day. Indeed I feel the Christian Church should not only apologize, but do public penance for the way we have treated people of color, women, adherents of other religions and those we designated heretics, as well as gay and lesbian people.

Life moves on. As the poet James Russell Lowell once put it more than a century ago: "New occasions teach new duties, Time makes ancient good uncouth." I am ready now to claim the victory. I will from now on assume it and live into it. I am unwilling to argue about it or to discuss it as if there are two equally valid, competing positions any longer. The day for that mentality has simply gone forever.

This is my manifesto and my creed. I proclaim it today. I invite others to join me in this public declaration. I believe that such a public outpouring will help cleanse both the church and this nation of its own distorting past. It will restore integrity and honor to both church and state. It will signal that a new day has dawned and we are ready not just to embrace it, but also to rejoice in it and to celebrate it.- John Shelby Spong

ceres artwork

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; But it probably did strengthen her faith in dance's ability to suggest and strengthen concepts of community, self, and instigating and supporting change. The upcoming in/divisible, presented as part of this year's National Queer Arts Festival, may also serve as an affirmation for those engaged in the ongoing struggle for equality. Though there is nothing overtly political about Brown Ceres' choreography, her dances are forceful and affirming of female identity. At their best, they draw you in because of the complexity of the impulses that generate and control them. Still, if you look closely, you can see how they undermine conventional mores and ingrained patterns of thought. But they mostly convince because they are so beautifully and emotionally logical in the way they communicate. For in/divisible, Brown Ceres is collaborating with two soul mates. Aerial artist Sonya Smith complements her own (physically) more gravity-bound choreography. Joining them from San Diego is Sadie Weinberg with American Torch Songs, a set of short dances that look back at one of the universal high school experiences: getting dumped.

ask generation "tweet"!

http://www.sfgate.com/columnists/morford/

"Sorry, enemies of gay marriage. Ask the various wary, bepimpled youth of Generation Tweet what they think about those scary gay people getting married.

Here is what [their response] tells you: Gay marriage is a foregone conclusion. It's a done deal. It's just a matter of time. For the next generation in particular, equal rights for gays is not even a question or a serious issue, much less a sinful hysterical conundrum.

The pattern is as old as fear itself. Remember, only rarely does true progress appear as a single, momentous, Obama-like shift that reverberates across the planet and changes everything in an instant. Most frequently it comes in fits and starts and hiccups, small lurches and hard-fought battles shot through with little spitballs of hate and intolerance and heaps of misunderstanding. You know, just like now.
Evidence? Plenty. Just look at the numbers: Support for gay marriage is now the highest it's been in American history, somewhere between 42 and 48 percent nationwide. Just a few decades ago, support was down in the 20s. It's been rising steadily ever since, never once regressing.
Or, flip that data around. According to FiveThirtyEight, marriage bans like California's are losing support at a rate of about two percent a year. According to that model, more than half of U.S. states will vote against bans like the contemptible Prop 8 as soon as 2012, if not sooner. By 2024, even miserably homophobic joints like Alabama and Mississippi will be flying the rainbow flag.

Do not misunderstand: Setbacks like this Prop 8 decision are painful and even cruel, and the gay couples and activists who've been at the forefront of the fight since the beginning are nothing short of heroic. Like civil rights activists of any stripe before them, the subsequent generations who will take gay rights for granted will have them to thank forevermore for paving the way and fighting the good fight.

But these setbacks are not insurmountable roadblocks. They are merely obnoxious speed bumps on what social conservatives see as our nation's ungodly highway to hell. They only slow us down a little.
A new campaign in the fight for marriage equality is already taking shape. Evolution is happening, the energy and momentum are unstoppable. Simply put, the ignorance and homophobia that fueled and funded Prop 8 in the first place will not stand.
Don't believe it? Hey, just ask your kids.

gotta love the 'experts' on fluidity

Is it trendy, even fashionable to 'go gay'? waves of change in the air...

Don't care as long as it raises awareness and brings a little more tolerance into focus. I can’t find anywhere in the bible when God says anything specifically about homosexuals (gay or lesbian and other) wherein the story actually holds true by today’s standards. Is there something that your religious leader has told you that makes you think that ‘God hates Fags?’ I sincerely believe (and have been taught) that religious study requires intelligent inspection and interpretation, not just blind acceptance. A religious path is completely specific to the individual on that path. Each relationship with God is unique. Furthermore, God reserves the right to do the judging, not us…

It dawned on me after thinking about something that a YES-ON-H8TER wrote earlier: ‘God loves the sinner and hates the sin.’ It made me think. Wouldn’t it be appropriate for you to make a decision to love others with the openness of your heart, and to do them a kindness by treating them equally and assuming them equal rights (treat others as you wish to be treated). And then go to God and ask for his forgiveness if he feels you have done something wrong. Explain that you made a choice to love thy neighbor because you believe in love, respect and equal rights while we’re here on this planet together trying to figure all of this out. You want to create connections and strong bonds with your neighbors while we are on earth together instead of erecting walls of hatred and discrimination. Then let (Him) know that you know (He’ll) make the right judgment of the ‘sinner’. I think that would make sense.

In going back through my many conversations, I have to clarify my perspective a little: In my understanding of it all, I’m not going to hell any faster than you’re going to heaven. Let’s be honest - Those are decisions that just haven’t been made yet and they aren’t decisions made by you and I. Those are Final Judgments that happen at the culmination of our lives and these are far off for many of us. We’ve got a lot of time here on the earth to live together in kindness, hope, respect, faith, love, and an ever-triumphant push towards equality. And if you’re religous "absolutes" hold true and the judgments shake out in your favor in the end, then I will applaud your luck in being exposed to the ‘right’ religion. And if you’re correct, then we’ll end up in different places and you can say you told me so…

Your vote to deny me rights, hurt me. I’m just not willing to hurt others in God’s name. I’m not willing to ask people to behave and contribute like first-class citizens and then treat them like second-class citizens. It’s archaic and I’ve read my history books... This is nation of free people and it is built on a tradition of personal liberty and equality. I have faith in you as a compassionate American.

a powerful christian concern for equality

...The following was written by a friend of a friend of mine... "I felt I needed to share this with people because I couldn't think of a more perfect way to say exactly how i felt about Prop 8 passing. So listen to Hmy friend and please pass it on if you wish."

I have never posted anything like this but I feel I must now. As most of us know, Proposition 8 passed and eliminated the rights for homosexual couples to marry. With all the debates and slander spoken among many friends and colleagues the last few days, one bible passage comes to mind,“I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how you will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” -John 13: 34-35

It saddens me when I hear friends that disapprove of same-sex marriage because it is against their religion. I would consider myself Christian and I can’t understand why another Christian would show such hate and intolerance towards another of God’s creatures. Would someone explain? I mean honestly tell me what gives us the authority to judge someone in such a way?I don’t mean to attack anyone, but I feel attacked as a Christian who is supporting the stop of this injustice.I understand if people are uncomfortable with homosexuality. It’s only been around for the past 3,000 years. But I ask you not to strip someone of a right because you are uncomfortable with it.
For those who say the bible forbids homosexuality, let me remind you of a few things. It also says that a man shall not divorce his wife, shave his facial hair, have sex with a woman while she is menstruating, masturbate, talk ill of his neighbor, lust for another, use birth control, or work on the Sabbath. Where are the laws on this? If we allow religion to rule, there is no government.
Again I don’t mean to offend. I have been a Christian all my life and would just like some answers in a time of confusion.Let me close with the following passage,“Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you. Why do you notice the splinter in you brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye’ while the wooden beam is in your eye? You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam in your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.”- Matthew 7:1-5I don’t know about you, but I’ll probably spend most of my life removing MY wooden beam."

This is perfection in my mind. thanks for reading.

start a dialogue

I feel moved, in this time of great change, to sincerely thank those of you who opposed Prop 8.

I must say, I was almost as surprised by my own despair yesterday, as I was by the outcome of Prop 8. I expected that electing Obama would out weight the potential pain of seeing the perpetuation of hatred. My feelings of confusion and isolation were all-encompassing and I thank many of you for reaching out to me with compassion and solidarity.

I know that those of you who have fallen in love know that you do not choose that person – that person is gifted to you to further your learning on this planet and to deepen your experience of that which is divine in this world. This being my very first, raw experience with such loud and obvious discrimination, I was literally shocked out of my skin. Not because I am an idealist and only believe we will move forward on every progressive platform the first time ‘round… but truly out-of-my-skin because 54% of women voted Yes, because 70 percent of African-Americans voted Yes on 8. I do not have to explain to you the hypocrisy of a state overwhelming proving that we want to move beyond discrimination by electing Obama - and then voting to discriminate against another minority group—the LGBT community.

In all of my up-bringing (in suburban and rural Oregon), experiences around the world, all of my years of education, and professional experience, I have only ever come to know that people are fundamentally equal. In my experience, it is without question that we are equal in the eyes of a loving God, and absolutely, we need be equal under the law.

I am very grateful for your love and support in my life. And I hope you will continue to talk to people about equality and the deep need for us to understand in our hearts that there are different ways to be in the world. If we all shared the same views we would have nothing left to learn… I look forward to my generation eroding these fears we have of each other – eroding the last outposts of a culture of hate.

If you yourself voted Yes on 8, or are in a different state but would have, or you know someone who did, I would be honored to talk to you or them. I really want to understand why. I want to hear your story, your rational, in your words – not from a commercial or a cold statistic. I want to thank my friend Chris for being the first to share his views with me. Please be courageous and contact me so we can begin a dialogue.

With love, hope and an unwavering commitment to equality for all,
Brittany

http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-129159

third time's a charm!

What a beautiful day! We got married - for the third time. Feb 13th, 2004 at SF City Hall (reversed in aug 04), Aug. 19th, 2004 with our families and then again, legally - TODAY!

AND - as it turns out, our marriage will stand regardless of the Prop 8 vote - the way the deputy explained it to us this morning is that they changed the form when the supreme court over-ruled the ban on same-sex marriage - so the marriage license form now reads party A and party B... there is little way for them to tell the gender of Party A and Party B by 'name' alone - and therefore will not go back and dissect each application since these marriages were absolutely legal during at the time of contract under California law!!!

So - we're married! It's really that simple. unless you have direct experience with a gay person, you might not fight for their rights in the same way. Weird, huh?

I had a very profound experience last week at my office. My boss and I were having our 1:1 and before we got into details, he stopped me to tell me about a conversation he'd had over the weekend. "I had a very interesting discussion on Prop 8 yesterday. I was talking to an aquaintance of mine and realized that he was going to vote yes on 8. I looked at him and said very plainly - that would mean that the very person who has supported me the most over the last month, who has been right at my side, who is one of the most organized and thoughtful people i know, someone who would make a great mother, someone who's opinion and guidance I have valued... this person would not have the same rights as me... now that just doesn't make any sense. i am voting no."

I was utterly astonished, endeared, flattered and humbled all in an instant. Praise aside... did I just become a catalyst for dialogue... for change... did he possibly change his friend's mind? Did meeting me change my boss's mind? (I have only know him for a short time.)

I must say - I am so honored to be a part of the issue - I am so proud to people I know standing up for equality. thank you.

Gotta Heart Apple!

Apple is contributing $100,000 to fight Proposition 8 - can you believe I had already purchased balloons for the day!!ttp://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2008/10/apple-against-t.html
this is AWESOME!!!

listen to our children!

I continune to feel deeply perplexed about why anyone would want to meddle in other people family affairs... These are our FAMILIES we're talking about. Why talk away a right for someone to commit love to another person who brings them joy? it just doesn't make sense.

I LOVE the new ad paid for by the psychos who support Prop8: ENTERS a six year old girl to her mother: "mommy, today i learned in school that a prince can marry and prince... and i can marry a princess!" she shouts with glee!! As if thats so horrible for a child to envision a fantastic, futuristic life - As if whatever a 6yr old says binds them to their dreams for the rest of their lives! If this were the case, i'd probably be wonderwoman from my underoo days!

As if the they way the world has worked in the past is any great justice: telling children that marriage is only between a man and a woman and that anything else is shameful and unwelcome. Are you as sick in your stomach as I am at the thought of Sarah Palin as Vice President of the United States? Since Palin gave her speech accepting the Republican nomination for the Vice Presidency, Barack Obama's campaign has raised over $10 million dollars. Some of you may already be supporting the Obama campaign financially; others of you may still be recovering from the primaries. None of you, however, can be happy with Palin's selection, especially on her positions on women's issues. So, if you feel you can't support the Obama campaign financially, may I suggest the following fiendishly brilliant alternative?Make a donation to Planned Parenthood. In Sarah Palin's name.

A Planned Parenthood donation is tax deductible, while a political donation isn't.And here's the good part: when you make a donation to PP in her name, they'll send her a card telling her that the donation has been made in her honor. Here's the link to the Planned Parenthood website:http://www.plannedparenthood.org/go to donate, then honorary giftsYou'll need to fill in the address to let PP know where to send the "in Sarah Palin's honor" card.

I suggest you use the address for the McCain campaign headquarters:
McCain for President
1235 S. Clark Street1st Floor
Arlington , VA 22202
Feel free to send this along to all your women friends as well as your men friends and urge them to do the same.
Thanks.

Women SAY NO to Palin

I am sure you have likely recieved this from another source by now - but just in case, i had to forward it along. I will never endorse or respect her archaic and barbarian views on abortion, LGBT issues and the rights of women, nor can I even understand her ignorant denial of the environmental devastation we face as a planet. Equality for all people and conservation of all natural resources is the only way to move forward and if she does not support these things, then I do not support her. I cannot fathom another four years wherein the world views of my 15yr old students are more enlightened than the narrow views of our nation’s leaders.
